A Banksy painting depicting politicians in the House of Commons as chimpanzees has sold for a record price of £9.8 million.

The painting, named Devolved Parliament, had an estimated hammer price of between £1.5-2 million.

Bidding for the work lasted 13 minutes at Sotheby's in London on Thursday and the final sale price is a record for a work by the secretive British street artist.

After the work sold, the artist posted on Instagram a quote from art critic Robert Hughes, with the caption: "Record price for a Banksy painting set at auction tonight. Shame I didn’t still own it."

Devolved Parliament, which went on public display for the first time in London on September 28, was painted in 2009 for an exhibition in Bristol.

It stands at 13 ft across, making it the anonymous artist’s largest known canvas.

The auction record for a Banksy work was £1.46 million for "Keep it Spotless" which sold at Sotheby's in New York in 2008.

The elusive artist has set up a retail shop in south London for the next two weeks.

People can visit the store but can only buy products online.

The artist said he was being "forced" to launch the online shop - called Gross Domestic Product - because a greeting cards company was attempting to legally trade using his name.
