London's top barristers and judges were warned today to beware swooping seagulls at the Royal Courts of Justice.

The defensive birds were apparently protecting a chick which had found its way on to an enclosed, paved outdoor area in the courts complex near Fleet Street.

Its parents flew towards anyone who went near.

Warning signs written with capital letters in red font read: "Caution. Beware nesting/swooping seagulls."

Problems with seagulls at the RCJ, where the High Court often sits in London, are apparently common. A barristers' society based near the complex employs a falconer to scare them off.

Hawks can be seen tethered to perches on lawns belonging to the Honourable Society of Lincoln's Inn.
