Battersea Power Station plan for ‘street food market in the sky’

“New urban quarter”: how the retail space in Battersea Power Station could look after redevelopment

The developers of Battersea Power Station plan to create a “street food market in the sky”, with up to 60 vans and stalls crammed on to the third floor of the industrial landmark.

The market is part of a vision to transform the riverside building and its surrounding 40 acres of land into a new “village” for London, with hundreds of shops, cafés, restaurants and bars.

The Grade II*-listed building will have a central lift to bring street food vans normally associated with areas such as Borough Market, Shoreditch and Kings Cross up to its third level.

Battersea Power Station Development Company chief executive Rob Tincknell said: “It will be the most amazing food court in London.

New plans: Phase 3 of the Battersea Power Station Development

“The vehicles will go up and park in their space on the third floor, 60 different vendors in the street food environment.”

In total it is planned there will be 115 food and drink outlets in the power station and 250 across the £8 billion development. The plans were unveiled ahead of a global “roadshow” aimed at attracting brands from all over the world to open at Battersea.

Sweeping changes: developers are looking for UK and global brands, businesses and restaurants to take up residence at the landmark London site

The tour, led by Mr Tincknell and senior executives from the Malaysian backers of the scheme, will visit 13 cities in 11 countries in October and November.

The first 40 operators are expected to open when the first phase of the redevelopment, known as Circus West, is completed in late 2016.

Iconic building: the famous chimneys at the power station are being knocked down and rebuilt

Mr Tincknell said: “We want to make sure we have the best of British but Battersea is such an important project that it’s an opportunity for us to attract in new businesses that haven’t yet come to London.”

Tan Sri Liew Kee Sin, chairman of the Battersea Power Station Holding Company, said: “The shareholders’ ambition for Battersea Power Station is to create an amazing new urban quarter for London and one that is enjoyed both day and night.

“This is behind the drive to find the very best mix of UK and world- wide businesses to lease over three million sq ft of retail and office accommodation.”
