BBC staff smell a rat … and call in pest control

Rat scare: traps have been laid at White City
26 March 2012

The BBC has called in pest control after claims that staff spotted several rats at the Radio 4 office at Television Centre in White City.

The building is home to the Today programme, The World At One and PM. Workers claim it has been neglected while the corporation focuses on moving occupants to refurbished Broadcasting House near Oxford Street, and Salford.

Staff affected include presenters John Humphrys, Evan Davis and Sarah Montague. Pest control officers have left traps under desks. One joker reportedly left a rubber rat next to Humphrys’s workspace.

A BBC insider told the Daily Mail: “The gentle ebb and flow of the workplace is now punctuated with screams. Probably the main thing attracting them is people eat at their desks. There are crumbs everywhere.”

“Working conditions are increasingly squalid as they’re not bothering with repairs. We’ve had leaking ceilings, a burst sewage pipe, dirty socks in the fridge, now rats.”

The BBC did not comment.
