The boxing world today paid tribute to a popular matchmaker and manager who died after being hit by a train at New Cross Gate yesterday.

Dean Powell, 46, worked with many of the sport’s best-known names including Lennox Lewis, Joe Calzaghe and Nigel Benn over his 25-year career. His death is not believed to be suspicious.

In a statement, boxing promoter Frank Warren said: “All of us are deeply saddened and shocked by the loss of our very close friend and colleague. Dean was a valued and popular member of our team and within the sport of boxing.”

Boxer Amir Khan wrote on Twitter: “Sorry to hear the loss of Dean Powell. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He was close to team Khan and trained me for 2 fights. You will be missed.”

Calzaghe added: “Shocked and saddened to hear the news of Dean Powell. Was in my corner for many of my big fights. RIP Dean.”

Ricky Hatton wrote: “A great man — boxing will miss him.”
