A furious builder has quit his job in London after he was ordered to remove two flags which he put up to support England in the World Cup.

Gordon McGiffen, 46, displayed the flags at each end of a brand new block of flats which is covered in scaffolding.

The site lies close to the River Thames in Bermondsey, South East London, and the flags could be seen for miles around.

But soon afterwards bosses in charge of the homes scheme ordered him to remove them.

Gordon, a bricklayer from Lewisham, said “I was told to take them down because people were upset over it.

“All I am trying to do is support England and I have been told I am not allowed to.”

But home builders Keepmoat, who are building the complex of 691 flats off Jamaica Road, say they have withdrawn the flags because they posed a health and safety risk.
