Camden crash: Woman killed by 'cement truck' in high street crash

A 79-year-old woman has died after reportedly being hit by a cement truck in north London this morning.

Emergency services, including London’s Air Ambulance, raced to the scene in Pratt Street, near Camden High Street, after the crash at 9.35am.

A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service said they had been called to reports of a road traffic accident.

He said: “We sent two ambulance crews and a team leader to the scene, alongside London's Air Ambulance.

"Sadly a person died at the scene."

Shocked witnesses said the woman had been hit by a truck in the high street.

One shocked office worker saw the accident from his window.

He told the Standard: “It was a cement lorry which crushed a lady.”

“Everybody was really shocked,” he said. “Police have covered her up in sheets.”

The witness said the pedestrian appeared to have been crossing the road near the high street when the accident happened.

He said: “There have been quite a few accidents on that road and the street going up to it.

"But we haven’t seen anything like this. Police are everywhere.”

Ian Gould, from King's Cross, was walking through Camden following a meeting when he saw the aftermath of the accident.

He said: "There was quite obviously a person under a white and red blanket that had passed away. It was right in the middle of the road outside the Camden Head pub."

Mr Gould added: "There was a cement lorry parked up with a guy in a luminous orange outfit looking a bit distressed."

"There were around around 100 people nearby who all looked very dismayed," he said.

“Heaven has gained an Angel, God bless them & there [sic] family.”

The high street has been cordoned off by police near Mornington Crescent.

A spokesman for the Met Police said the lorry had stopped after the accident.

He said: "Collision investigators from the Roads and Transport Policing Command are at the scene and enquiries into the circumstance of the incident are ongoing.

"There are some road closures in the local area.

"There have been no arrests and enquiries continue."

Police are keen to speak with the driver of a silver van, which passed through the scene moments after the collision, who is likely to have witnessed the collision.
