A cancer patient who lost a diamond ring made from her mother’s ashes on the day she attended hospital is appealing for its safe return.

Sheelah Evans, 55, who is battling a rare form of the disease, had been to University College London Hospital in Bloomsbury on June 5 when she lost the precious item.

She said: “I had to take off my jewellery for the MRI scan and X-ray. It was only when I was on the train home that I realised I didn’t have that ring.”

Priceless: Sheelah Evans wearing the ring made from the ashes of mother Patricia

Her sister Nareen Foley, who has an identical ring, posted a photo on Facebook. The central yellow gem was made by LifeGem using the carbon of their mother Patricia’s ashes. It is engraved with a 17-digit ID number and registered on an international database. It is 9ct gold, with an ordinary diamond on each side of the main gem.

On the day she lost the ring, Ms Evans had been to UCLH with husband Keith.

After the appointment they took the Circle line to Tower Hill then an 11am train from Fenchurch Street to Southend.

Mother: Patricia Crumpler

Ms Evans, a reception teacher who lives in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, said: “It’s 10 years since we lost mum and I’d love to have it for that.”

Patricia died in 2004, aged 79, from oesophageal cancer. Ms Evans, who has a son and daughter and grandchildren, discovered that she had a tumour in her larynx in March. She was diagnosed with plasma cell neoplasma and the rare condition amyloidosis.

A UCLH spokeswoman said: “The radiography team searched all the scanners, the waiting areas, changing rooms and toilets. We are very sorry it was not recovered despite our best efforts.”

If the ring is found the family can be contacted on nareen.f@gmail.com
