Stunned bypassers urged people to avoid Peckham Rye this afternoon after a car burst into flames which reportedly triggered a series of explosions.

Police and fire crews were called to Rye Lane at the junction with Nigel Road just after midday to reports of a car on fire.

Photographs uploaded to Twitter show the vehicle engulfed by flames but the blaze has now been extinguished.

A Met Police spokesman said a road closure was put in place while emergency services dealt with the fire.
