It was a case of Carry On Constable when youngsters in west London had a kickabout with 77-year-old actress Barbara Windsor in a pitch full of police officers.

The event at Barnet FC was organised to foster better relations between young people and the Met, and saw coppers referee three different age categories.

Police said the EastEnders and Carry On actress attended "on behalf of Boris Johnson".

The day was organised by everyone2gether (e2g), a local project to keep children and teenagers safe and away from crime that is run jointly by Barnet officers and Nutmeg, a local community group.

Sgt Dan Reid, who runs e2g, called the event "a great success" and added it was good to see young people from nearby estates "interacting positively" with officers the regularly came into "confrontation" with.

"We have several more workshop events in the pipeline," he added.
