Chinese New Year 2017: Spectacular pictures as hordes of Londoners descend on Trafalgar Square for parade

Tom Powell29 January 2017

Hordes of Londoners descended on Trafalgar Square and Chinatown for a spectacularly colourful parade to mark the start of the Chinese New Year.

Dancing lions, acrobats, puppet artists and vibrant floats took over as London celebrated the year of the rooster on Sunday.

The parade began at 10am in Trafalgar Square but the festivities continued throughout the day, with martial arts displays and lots of live music.

Pictures showed a colourful array of costumed performers making their way down streets lined with spectators.

The parade’s theme was “China: Today & Yesterday” - celebrating the best of the past and present in Chinese culture.

The procession of dancing lions and six floats wove its way through Chinatown, passing craft and foodie stalls on Wardour and Gerrard Street.
