City Hall has ruled out fast track pedestrian lanes being rolled out in London amid calls for the capital to follow in the footsteps of Liverpool.

The lane in Liverpool's city centre is aimed at separating fast walkers from dawdlers and pavement hoggers - and many Londoners have called for the idea to be introduced in the capital.

Dermot Finch posted on Twitter: “Livepool opens first-ever fast walking lane. London, please follow suit!”

Andy Lane added: “Bring this to London please #impatient #walker”, while Tamara Dumas said: “Pedestrian fast lane? Yes please! Need them in London!”

Asked whether there were any plans to introduce similar lanes in London, a City Hall spokesman told the Standard: “We don’t have any plans”.

Questioned on whether it was something that would be considered further at a later date, the spokesman added: “No, there are no plans.”

The fast track lane at the Liverpool One shopping centre was launched by Argos and will be in place until Sunday, November 8.

According to research commissioned by Argos, almost half of Britons consider the slow pace of high streets as their biggest shopping nightmare.
