The trespasser was reportedly stopped within 20 minutes but the incident is still causing delays to many train services.

Commuters also experienced delays at Stratford station in east London.

Greater Anglia said all lines were now open but customers should expect delays until 9.30pm.

All trains between Liverpool Street towards Hackney Downs and Stratford were affected, it said.

In a statement on its website, the train company said: "Train services running to and from this station may be cancelled or delayed by up to 30 minutes at short notice. Disruption is expected until 21:30.

"We thank you for your patience and understanding."

A British Transport Police spokesman said a person had been arrested at the scene following reports of a trespasser.

He said: "The person was arrested at 17.42 after we were called at 17.17. Enquiries continue."

In a separate incident this evening, train users at Euston station faced delays of up to two hours because of problems with overhead wires.

Two out of four lines were closed after the issue was reported between Euston and Watford Junction stations.
