A campaign has launched to start a serious league for a sport which crosses football and zorbing that was first invented as a joke.

The game, invented by a Norwegian TV show, is like a normal game of football apart from one exception – players run around with giant zorb balls around their heads.

It has taken London by storm with several companies offering packages for groups of friends to play the game for a day.

Ruth Ball, a chef-patron to a liquer company, loves playing it so much she wants to set up the London Bubble Football League to enable people to play competitively.

She has launched a crowdsourcing campaign in an attempt to make her dream a reality and is hoping supporters will dig deep to raise £13,000.

Ms Ball, who lives in Canning Town, said: “Together we can build a real community around bubble football, playing to win on the field but making new friends off. You should be able to charge tackle someone halfway across the pitch but still help them up and go for a drink afterwards.”

The money will go towards setting up at least 20 teams playing 12 matches over 20 weeks, funding the cost of referees, the zorb-balls and rent of pitches.

So far £832 has been raised for the campaign and Bubble Football fans have until September 8 to make a donation.

Ms Ball added: “In a big city like London it can be sometimes be hard to meet new people and form lasting friendships. Making the commitment to regular league matches but then doing something so disarmingly silly and fun should help us to break out of our shells and make some real fast friends.”
