A cyclist who died yesterday after colliding with a lorry in the City was a 26-year-old student on a volunteering placement.

Janina Gehlau, of Dusseldorf, Germany, had only recently moved to London when she was struck by the vehicle in Ludgate Circus on Friday.

She died surrounded by family members at the Royal London Hospital yesterday.

The history of arts student was in London for three months completing a three month volunteer project for her dissertation.

She leaves behind husband Marcel Gehlau, who she married in 2011.

A spokesman for City of London Police said: “Janina Gehlau was seriously injured in a collision with a lorry on Ludgate Hill, close to the junction of Farringdon Street, on Friday morning and was taken to the Royal London Hospital.

“She sadly died with her family by her bedside on Monday afternoon.”

Tributes have been paid to Mrs Gehlau by her family, friends and colleagues.

New Talents, an arts company Mrs Gehlau was involved with, wrote: “We mourn for our team member Janina Gehlau, who suddenly and prematurely died this week.

“Our best wishes and thoughts go to her family and her friends.

“We are glad that we could get to know her and work with her.”

The driver of the lorry stopped at the scene and there have been no arrests. City of London Police continue to investigate.
