Cyclists warned to take extra care on roads during Uber protest by London black cab drivers

Protest: thousands of cab drivers will take part in a Europe-wide protest over American taxi app Uber

Cyclists are being warned to take extra care on London's roads tomorrow as a protest by London cab drivers looks set to cause travel chaos.

The strike, which has been sparked by the rise in popularity of American taxi app Uber, is expected to bring the roads around Trafalgar Square to a standstill from 2pm tomorrow until the early evening.

As many as 10,000 licenced taxis as expected to take part in the procession of black cabs.

Transport for London is advising cyclists in particular to be aware that roads could become congested.

Commuters making short journeys are being told to avoid delays by walking and to use the London Underground instead of buses for longer trips.

Members of the Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association are calling on TfL to ban Uber, which they say is being allowed to operate "outside the law".

People can order an Uber taxi using a smart phone app to locate the nearest available vehicle, and the fare is calculated by distance and time.

The app has 3,000 registered drivers in the capital, who black cab drivers say are using a taximeter that only they are entitled to use.

But Garrett Emmerson, TfL's chief operating officer for surface transport, has dismissed tomorrow's protest as "pointless", saying any potential restrictions relating to Uber would be a "legal issue that is down to the Courts to decide upon".

He added: "TfL will work with the Metropolitan Police to do all we can to keep central London moving today, however, given the scale of the likely disruption, we would advise drivers to avoid the area if at all possible."
