MPs have rallied together to ask the public to vote for late Sir David Amess’ dog to be named Westminster Dog of the Year.

Mr Amess was stabbed to death at his constituency surgery in Essex on October 15 in a tragedy which shook the nation.

Before his death, the politician had entered his French Bulldog Vivienne into the competition and now many people have set their heart on his dog winning in a fitting tribute for the late MP.

Social media was awash with heartwarming calls from MPs urging the public to vote for Vivienne in the Westminster Dog of the Year competition.

Suzanne Webb, MP for Stourbridge, led the way as she asked her followers to place their vote for Vivienne instead of her own pooch Sid.

She wrote: “Westminster Dog of the Year Show is on the 28th October and my Sid has been entered - but please support me and vote for the lovely Vivienne, David Amess’s dog. David as you know lost his life on Friday in a shocking incident.”

MP for Cardiff North Anna McMorrin, followed suit with the post: “Westminster Dog of the Year is next week. As much as we all love Cadi, please support me by voting for Sir David Amess and his beautiful French Bulldog, Vivienne. David’s love for animals was unmatched. He will be sorely missed.”

Kate Nightingale tweeted: “I have voted for Vivienne in memory of Sir David Amess in the hope that it will bring a tiny bit of comfort (and even a tiny smile) to Sir David’s family, friends and colleagues in these dark days.”

In September, Mr Amess had asked his followers to cast their vote for the “lovely” Vivienne who he revealed brings him great joy.

“If I am feeling down, the dog lifts my spirits as she is always pleased to see me and she makes me smile.” He previously wrote.

“Every time I walk into the room Vivienne throws herself at me, lies on her back with her legs in the air to be tickled. But before that she always brings a toy so she is of a generous, giving nature.”

The public can vote for the competition until October 27.
