A huge tower of black smoke could be seen for miles after a crane burst into flames in south east London.

More than 20 firefighters were tackling the blaze at a concrete factory in Deptford after the machine erupted in fire shortly after 6pm on Saturday.

The London Fire Brigade said four fire engines and 21 firefighters were attempting to bring the fire under control throughout the evening.

Witnesses shared footage of the spectacular fire on social media as huge flames leapt up the sides of the crane.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A fire brigade spokesperson said: “Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers have been called to a fire at a concrete factory in Creek Road, Deptford.

“Half of a crane is currently alight. Control room officers received 52 calls to alert the Brigade of the very visible fire.

“The Brigade was called at 1817 and fire crews from Greenwich, Deptford, East Greenwich, and New Cross fire stations are attending the incident.”
