A car has crashed through a barrier near a London Underground station in south-west London, grinding the District Line to a halt.

The vehicle smashed through a fence and hit a barrier near the tube tracks close to Southfields station at around 2.55pm on Wednesday.

The driver of the vehicle is believed to have suffered a medical episode and they have been treated by paramedics.

A spokesman for the British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to the line near Southfields underground station at around 2.55pm today (8 May) following reports that a car had gone through the fences alongside the railway line.

“Officers attended, alongside colleagues from the London Fire Brigade, Network Rail, and the Metropolitan Police Service and work is ongoing to clear any obstructions from the tracks.

“It is believed the driver of the vehicle suffered a medical episode and they have been treated by paramedics.”

Trains have been unable to run between Earl’s Court and Wimbledon since the crash and Transport for London told the Standard trains will be running as soon as possible once the incident is cleared.

The Metropolitan Police were called to reports that a car had collided with a fence in Sutherland Grove at 2.50pm with the London Fire Brigade called to the scene shortly after 3pm.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Crews worked to make the scene safe alongside officers from the Metropolitan Police Service. A nearby rail line was closed as a precaution whilst firefighters responded.

“The Brigade was called at 1504 and the incident was over for firefighters at 1642. One fire engine from Wandsworth Fire Station and a fire rescue unit from Battersea Fire Station are currently at the scene.”
