Dozens of students camp outside travel agent STA Travel to bag £49 flights from London to Malaysia

Dozens of holiday enthusiasts are camping overnight outside a London travel agents in the hope of bagging £49 flights to Malaysia.

The flash sale launches tomorrow morning and people have been queuing in tents outside the Victoria branch of STA Travel since Monday.

The agency, which calls itself the world’s leading student travel company, is offering lucky holidaymakers the chance to buy return Malaysia Airlines flights from London to Langkawi for the special fare of £49.

Just 49 tickets will be sold on a first-come first-served basis at two locations in the UK – London and Manchester.

Doors will open from 9am on Thursday for students hoping to bag the bargain.

On Tuesday, the queue of people was already seen snaking around the corner as students kept warm in sleeping bags after spending their first night on the streets.

Others planned to turn up first thing on Wednesday morning amid fears temperatures were dropping overnight.

According to Travel Weekly, the first two people in the London queue said the weather had been “freezing” so they bought extra pillows and duvets.

Tropical paradise Langkawi is a beautiful archipelago on the west coast of Malaysia and harbours crystal clear seas and jungles.

STA Travel’s UK manager, Tim Fryer, said: “We are very excited to be able to offer these incredible Malaysia Airlines fares to our customers.

“Langkawi boasts some of the world’s best beaches, wonderful wildlife and marine life and delicious local delicacies.”

He added: “It’s no wonder that when we’ve offered similar fares in the past we’ve had people queuing outside the stores for two nights - you need to be prepared to give it your all to bag one of these £49 tickets.”

The knockdown-price flights can only be bought in person at London’s store in Grosvenor Gardens or in Manchester.

Anyone who arrives in the queue by 9am but is after position 49 will go into a lucky draw raffle to win a final £49 ticket.

After the first 49, the travel agency will be then be selling 25 return flights in the London store at a price of £149.
