The Duchess of Sussex has reportedly given a reading at a Christmas carol concert in honour of a childhood friend of her husband who was killed in a car crash at 18 years old.

Harry and Meghan attended the seasonal service at St Luke’s Church in London which is organised every year by the Henry van Straubenzee Memorial Fund, which helps schools in Uganda.

The charity was named after one of Prince Harry’s school friends who was killed instantly when the car in which he was a passenger hit a tree outside Ludgrove prep school in 2002.

He was a classmate of Prince Harry’s, while his older brother Thomas was a friend of the Duke of Cambridge, who both Harry and William are said to remain close with to this day.

During the service on Tuesday evening, Meghan gave a speech at the carol service to an audience in the Chelsea church which included Pippa Middleton and her brother James, the Daily Mail reports.

Pictures show the royal couple leaving hand-in-hand through a back door before climbing into a car.

Pippa Middleton, who styled a £295 navy dress by Kate Spade, and her brother James were also pictured outside St Luke’s Church before the concert.

The Henry van Straubenzee Fund helps more than 28,000 children to get a better education.
