A skatepark in east London has become the first in Europe to get listed status.

The Rom, in Hornchurch, which will be grade II listed, is the second skatepark in the world to be given protection, it was announced today.

It comes after the Bro Bowl in Tampa, Florida, which was added to the US National Register of Historic Places last year.

The Rom - which is named after its positioning next to the River Rom and is used by skateboards, BMXs and scooters - is built using seamless pressurised concrete based on Californian skateparks.

The park, which covers a 8,000 square metre area, was built in 1978 by Adrian Rolt and G-Force, the leading skatepark designers of the period.

It was listed by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport on the advice of English Heritage.
