Enfield crash: Man and woman fighting for lives as car smashes into north London flat

Francesca Gillett4 September 2016

Two people are fighting for their lives after a car careered into a ground floor flat in north London.

Witnesses said the area in Enfield was on "lockdown" after the smash as paramedics worked to recover the victims from the car.

Members of the public pulled an injured woman from the smashed car while firefighters, police and paramedics rescued a man who was also trapped.

They are now both in hospital with life-threatening injuries, the Met Police said.

An air ambulance was reportedly scrambled and several police cars, fire engines and ground ambulances attended after the smash just after 12pm today.

The flats either side were evacuated but no one inside the building was injured, London Fire Brigade said.

Selina Serbin, who lives near the scene in Gunner Drive, said the events were “distressing”.

“They’re pulling people out now. Two ambulance helicopters have landed.

“But no movement on or off the village still at present. The whole area is on shutdown”.

The entrance to the Enfield Island Village residential area, near Enfield Lock, is cordoned off.

London’s Ambulance Service confirmed they had been called to the scene.

Two people are reported to have been injured, although their injuries are not yet known.

Officers working for the Met Police in Enfield have urged people to avoid the area near to Mollison Avenue and said severe delays could be expected.

London Fire Brigade said four fire engines were called to the smash after the car hit a tree and ground floor flat.

Crews spent just over two hours at the scene.

A spokeswoman for the London Ambulance Service said they were called at 11.58am. She said: "We sent an incident response officer, two ambulances, our Hazardous Area Response Team and a single responder in a car to the scene alongside London's Air Ambulance. The first of our medics arrived at the scene in under eight minutes.

"We treated two patients at the scene. They were both taken as a priority to central London hospitals."
