A motorcyclist is fighting for his life in hospital after a crash with a BMW car.

The collision, just after 12.30pm today, sent the rider skidding several feet into the wall of a pub and left his bike crumpled nearby.

Sharon Pattenden, who drove past the scene off Erith High Street moments later, told the Standard: “There was a BMW with the driver’s side all smashed in opposite the Running Horse pub.

“The bike was smashed and lying under one of the windows about 10 feet away.

“The ambulance crew was on the floor seeing to the guy with the motorbike on the footpath outside the pub.

“I think he was quite badly hurt because the air ambulance was there for a long time – at least half an hour.

“He was all in the right gear – his helmet was still on but he wasn’t moving and they were holding his head.”

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “We were called at 12.38pm to Erith High Street to reports of a road traffic collision.

“We sent an ambulance crew, an incident response officer and London’s Air Ambulance to the scene.

“We treated a man at the scene for a back injury and took him by air ambulance to a hospital in central London.”

A Scotland Yard spokesman said the man's condition was critical. Police do not yet know his age.
