Ex-mistress of City boss threatens to sue over 'sex-crazed stalker' claims

A former Bank of England economist faced embarrassment today after his “former mistress” threatened to sue him in revenge for allegedly wrecking her reputation by branding her a sex-crazed stalker.

Heleen Mees, 44, plans to strike back at 64-year-old Willem Buiter after being told yesterday that stalking charges against her were being dropped.

As part of the deal, she agreed to stay away from Cambridge-educated Mr Buiter, now chief economist at Citigroup, undergo 14 counselling sessions and keep out of trouble with the law.

Mr Buiter, who is married to University of London economics professor Anne Sibert, had complained that Ms Mees, herself a leading academic, had sent him thousands of emails over a four-year period, some sexually explicit, others containing threats.

The messages were said to include some relating to sex acts and naked pictures, while others were more sinister, such as one which read: “I hope you die (read this to your wife).”

Legal papers filed by Ms Mees’s lawyers brought to light more details about the intimate relationship the couple allegedly shared, including her claim that he called himself “ELB” which stood for “Enema Loving Brit”.

Under the agreement, she did not have to admit any guilt for the five charges of stalking and harassment she had faced. “We are delighted,” her lawyer, Ira London, said yesterday following the Manhattan hearing.

Her civil lawyer, Olav Haazen, said that since her arrest, Miss Mees had been sacked from her job at New York University’s Robert F Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, had lost her consulting business and is no longer writing for a number of prestigious newspapers in Holland.

Mr Haazen said the lawsuit against Citigroup he would file in the Manhattan Federal Court would force the company to hand over emails relating to meetings between Ms Mees and Mr Buiter. There was a “significant likelihood” a lawsuit against Mr Buiter himself would follow, he said.
