Greta Thunberg will attend Extinction Rebellion protests at Marble Arch this evening, according to the group.

In an update, a spokesman for the group said: "Delighted to announce that Greta Thunberg will be at our site in Marble Arch from around 7pm."

The 16-year-old founder of the school strikes against climate change previously said hoped to join the protesters in London.

She told the Guardian: "I would love to participate in their protests while in London if there is time and if they are still protesting.

"I think it's one of the most important and hopeful movements of our time. Civil disobedience is necessary to create attention to the ongoing climate and ecological crisis."

The news comes as police continued to clear sites, with Parliament Square now reopened to traffic, following Oxford Circus being similarly cleared on Saturday.

Protesters remain at Waterloo Bridge but have been told they must leave and go to Marble Arch if they wish to continue demonstrating.

The climate group has staged a week-long protest in the capital, blocking major roads including Oxford Circus and Waterloo Bridge, gluing themselves to trains and demonstrating at Heathrow Airport.

Police have made more than 831 arrests and charged 42 people.

The group has promised a scale down of protests if steps are made towards meeting its demands.

An update said the group would try to negotiate with the Mayor and Met Police to continue protests peacefully and at specific sites “agreed by mutual consent.”

“We will aim to agree with the Mayor of London/Met Police to allow us to keep peaceful protests going at Old Palace Yard and in turn agree that other sites be cleared and swarming ended,” the message said.

It said the group would promise not to return to these sites if the London Mayor “advances the implementation of the Declaration of Climate and Ecological Emergency and considers setting up a London Citizens’ Assembly. It would be a huge win for us if we can get a CA set up and climate emergency related actions implemented faster.”
