Families of young men killed in violent attacks united at Millwall FC match

Laura Proto5 March 2016

The families of eight young men killed in violent attacks came together at Millwall FC to commemorate their loved ones.

Jimmy’s Day at The Den on Saturday was organised by For Jimmy, a charity set up to honour murdered teenager Jimmy Mizen, who was killed in 2008.

Along with remembering Jimmy, supporters at the Millwall v Blackpool match also honoured Tony Blackmore, Alan Cartwright, Sam Guidera, Rob Knox, Godwin Lawson, Danny O’Shea and Connor Saunders.

To honour the young men who all lost their lives to violence, their families were invited onto the pitch before the match to unite them in their determination to end youth violence.

The young men were all supporters of London football teams including Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Charlton, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham, Chelsea and Millwall.

As part of the day, each family was gifted signed shirts from their relative’s favourite team.

Barry Mizen, father of Jimmy, said: “The support of the Millwall club and community is something we cherish.

“It was a privilege to welcome the families of other young people that have lost their sons to violence onto the pitch.

“Today was about uniting these families in our determination to make change through football.”

Millwall Chairman John Berylson added: “Barry and Margaret Mizen have been an inspiration to us all over many years now and we are proud to be able to support their work in tackling the issue of violent crime on our streets.

“We are delighted that so many other London clubs have chosen to become involved with ‘Jimmy’s Day at The Den on Saturday, and that all these young people who died in such tragic circumstances will be remembered and celebrated.”
