A family pet was electrocuted while tied to a newsagent's security shutter.

Five-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier Rylie died instantly from an electric shock last Wednesday.

Its owner, Kate Callum, tied the dog outside 'for two to three minutes' while she went shopping at Colney Mini Market on Colney High Street.

Ms Callum told the St Albans Review: "We are very upset about Rylie, but I am lucky to have my children and grandchild alive."

The shop was ordered to close by St Albans District Council on Friday while further investigations take place.

Engineers from UK Power Networks, which maintains the electricity network in St Albans, conducted an investigation of the shop.

UK Power Networks said the shock was due to an internal electrical fault within the property, rather than the electricity network."

The owner of the newsagent said he was unable to comment until he had received a full electrical report.
