A brother and sister at war over their dead mother’s funeral have finally agreed a compromise.
The siblings had taken their fight over where and how Iris Freud should be laid to rest to the High Court.
But her daughter Susanna Levrant, 66, who wanted a Christian service, and son David Freud, also in his sixties, who favoured a traditional Jewish event, have found a solution.
Mrs Levrant said it had been agreed that the ceremony will take place in two parts, separated by Mrs Freud’s interment.
The first portion will be solemnly traditional and Mr Freud and his family can leave after the burial if they wish.
However, Mrs Levrant and her supporters may return to the chapel to sing her mother’s favourite song.
The funeral service, eulogy and burial will be conducted under the neutral auspices of the Master of the Inner Temple Church.
Mrs Freud will find her final resting place in consecrated ground at Mortlake Cemetery, close to Putney where she lived for 66 years.
She died at West Middlesex University Hospital last month, and her body was kept there as the “biblical” High Court battle went on.
