Fine claret is a £19.99 corker as Lidl’s wines go upmarket

Its aisles would normally be stocked with discount lager rather than fine claret. But supermarket chain Lidl says it has been overwhelmed with demand for a £19.99 St Emilion Grand Cru being sold as part of a push upmarket.

The Château Laroze 2007 is the most expensive bottle of wine ever sold by the German-owned discount chain. It was chosen by a panel including consultant and Master of Wine Richard Bampfield, who gave the wine a score of 90 out of 100 putting it in the “outstanding” category.

He said: “This is a Grand Cru Classé which means it is at the top of the Bordeaux quality hierarchy and one has to expect to pay more for it. This is very fine, showing the fragrant aromas of St Emilion, a depth of flavour unusual for the vintage and a wonderful long finish, the hallmark of a great Bordeaux.”

The wine is from Lidl’s “Wine Cellar” range launched in September 2012 and which also includes a Châteauneuf du Pape and a Sancerre.

Lidl wine manager Ben Hulme said: “Since the recession hit, we’ve seen a shift in customer spending habits with many people, even those from more affluent backgrounds, finding smart ways to continue enjoying fine wines and good food at home. We want to offer people the opportunity to enjoy really good wines at prices that aren’t ridiculous.”
