This is the young mother who was hit by a car and killed while pushing her baby in a pram in south-east London.

Nicole Newman was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in Penge on Sunday night. The crash also left her eight-month-old child fighting for life in hospital.

A man who described himself as a family friend, wrote a tribute to the 23-year-old on Facebook.

He wrote: “Rip my angel… sweet dreams you will always be loved and missed greatly.”

Speaking to the Standard, he added: “Nicole is and was a loving family person, always happy, enjoyed time with family and had a very bright future.

“Such a shame to lose such a sweet loving person.”

Police and paramedics rushed to the scene of the crash in Croydon Road at 8.08pm on Sunday evening.

Joe Ball, a 30-year-old electrician, said the mother was thrown up into the air by the impact of the car.

He said: “I heard her boyfriend say, ‘My girlfriend is dead’. It was just horrendous to see something like that.”

A grandmother, who rushed to the child’s aid, said: “The baby was in the middle of the road in the pram. I went straight to the baby.

“Another lady came over and gave me her big scarf to put over the baby. I was on the phone to the paramedic. I didn’t want to move it out of the pram. The front wheel of the pram had come off and was on the other side of the road.”

A Met Police spokesman said: "Despite the efforts of officers and paramedics, the mother, believed to be in her 20s, was declared dead at the scene.

"The baby, believed to be eight months old, has been taken to hospital. His injuries have been assessed as life-threatening."

The 51-year-old driver of the car stopped at the scene and was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

He has not been arrested and was said to be helping police with their inquiries.

Detectives have appealed for witnesses or anyone who has video footage of the collision to come forward.

Those with information can call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 020 8285 1574 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
