A new exhibition promises to give art lovers "a rare chance" to see the plans for more than 20 works of art considered for a place on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square.

The show includes commissioned maquettes made by artists including Tracey Emin, Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor and Mark Wallinger.

The empty plinth in central London was originally intended to hold a bronze equestrian statue of King William IV but it was never installed.

Among the works featured on it over the years are a giant ship in a bottle, a rocking horse and Gormley's One and Other, which saw 2,400 people taking the space for an hour to do what they wanted, with some standing naked.

The exhibition, at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, also includes press clippings about the project and the reflections of the artists involved.

Alan Davey, the chief executive of Arts Council England, said the project gave people "the opportunity to enjoy great art produced by some of the best artists around today".

He said: "From the moment the first commission was unveiled, the Fourth Plinth became one of the most talked about public art commissions in the country and this exhibition at the ICA will give people a rare chance to see - in one place - the shortlisted art works that have been considered for the plinth over the past 13 years."

The exhibition Fourth Plinth: Contemporary Monument runs until January 20.
