Fitness fans are being encouraged to exercise both body and soul by taking part in free bell-ringing classes at churches across London.

The two-hour sessions are said to improve strength, stability, balance and endurance, as well as helping mental functions.

Dr Hannah Moir, senior lecturer in health and exercise at Kingston University, said the Ring For Fitness classes are an “interesting concept” and could combat the sedentary lifestyle many people lead.

“We should have 30 minutes of physical activity five times a week — which many don’t reach,” she said.

“This type of class could definitely appeal to people who don’t like structured exercise, such as the gym. It helps to promote a move away from the sedentary lifestyle that people have been leading with the advance of technology.” She said bell-ringing helps with upper-body strength and mobility, while strengthening a participant’s core flexibility — and also stressed the mental benefits.

“It’s so good for maintaining cognitive function,” she said. “Health is not just about physical exercise. We need to keep our brains active too.”

The classes are run by the Churches Conservation Trust and the Ringing Foundation in conjunction with trainers YMCAFit. They involve a steep climb up the belfry and lessons in the physical and mental techniques used to swing heavy bells.

Andrew Clark, class coordinator at St James Church, Bermondsey, said the social benefits are also important. “Bell-ringing can be great exercise but it’s a good stress reliever too,” he added. “It can be tricky — but addictive once you get the hang of it.”

Pupil Vivienne Perry, 33, of Elephant and Castle, said: “You can go into this zen-like zone when ringing all the bells together. It’s really satisfying when everyone gets it just right.”
