From Tower Bridge to that wobbly one - London bridges span the decades

Louise Jury20 February 2014

To mark the 120th anniversary of Tower Bridge, the history of the capital’s bridges will be celebrated in an exhibition at the Museum of London Docklands later this year.

Contemporary and historical pictures of all London’s famous bridges will show the changing landscape of the city. Curator Francis Marshall said: “To cross a London bridge is to really see the city. The bridges give a view of the capital impossible to appreciate from its jumbled medieval street plan.” Many bridges are recorded in different forms as they are taken down and re-built by successive generations.

Highlights include a picture of Hungerford Bridge, built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and photographed in 1845, by photography pioneer William Henry Fox Talbot.

The free exhibition will feature 100 works and will run from June 27 to November 2.
