A fund has been launched to raise money for a woman who lost a leg in a cycling crash in east London.

Friends and colleagues of Sarah Doone have so far raised over £12,000 after she was airlifted to hospital following the collision at Old Street roundabout.

She was hit by a lorry on the afternoon of Wednesday July 25.

Pictures from the scene showed her bike lying in the road next to a cement truck.

Ms Doone works as a freelance technical operator for the Al Jazeera English news network.

Colleagues and friends hope to raise at least £20,000 to cover her loss of earnings during her rehabilitation and make alterations to her flat as she recovers from the accident.

Those who set up the fund for cyclist Ms Doone said doctors managed to save her right leg but were forced to amputate her left leg.

Charlotte Dewsnap-Hayes, a colleague of Ms Doone told the Standard: "Sarah is inspiring. The way she's dealt with what's happened is amazing.

"I spoke with her today and you wouldn't have realised what's happened. She's upbeat and she will go on to lead a more extraordinary life. Nothing will get her down.

"She is a credit to her family . We are in awe of her positivity. We've all been so deeply affected by what's happened and she has made us all feel better. She's taken it on the chin."

Ms Dewsnap said that Ms Doone is planning to return to work in three months time.

She added: "You can see how much love there is for her by how much has been raised for her. She has a heart of gold and is always happy."

Leah Borromeo, a friend of Ms Doone, wrote online: "My friend Sarah was the woman run over on her bicycle at Old Street roundabout the other week. Donate what you can, when you can please."
