A crowdfunding campaign has launched to restore a Bob Marley mural after it was demolished to make way for a housing development in south east London.

Residents are hoping to raise £5,000 to cover artist fees, materials and equipment to recreate the mural in Brockley as a centrepiece for a new street art festival.

An original mural of the reggae icon was first painted in Coulgate Street, close to Brockley train station, more than 40 years ago.

It was replaced in 2005 as part of a black icons celebration, but was destroyed last year along with artist’s impressions of Maya Angelou and Jimi Hendrix.

Planning permission has been secured for the new mural site on a wall belonging to JD Wetherspoon pub The Brockley Barge, in Brockley Road, within metres of where the original painting was location.

Street artist Dale Grimshaw has been lined up to create the new image of the ‘Jammin’ singer.

Richard Marriner, area manager for JD Wetherspoon, said: “We are delighted to support Brockley Street Art Festival this year.

“These murals have been part of Brockley for 40 years and we are delighted to help the community preserve some of the artistic history from this area.”

Moira Tait, festival director, said: "A Bob Marley image has been part of Brockley for so many years now so it will be fantastic to see it back again, and we are thrilled that the painting will begin at the Brockley Max Opening Night."

The mural will feature in the Brockley Street Art Festival, taking place from May 29 to June 6.
