Games mascots make £400,000 for Mayor’s charity

Fund raiser: Mascot Wenlock at Heathrow airport

A charity auction of the Olympic and Paralympic mascots that were placed around London during the Games has raised almost £400,000.

So far, 66 Wenlocks and Mandevilles have been sold, with 14 more to go by the end of next week. The Union Jack Mandeville on Westminster Bridge fetched £20,000, while an “arty” Wenlock outside Tate Modern, painted by Turner prize-shortlisted artist Ian Davenport, went for £17,600.

Proceeds of the sale, organised by the Mayor’s Fund for London, will go to helping children in deprived areas.
