The only borough in London not to have its own cinema is finally getting a giant screen.

The 101-seat Curzon Goldsmiths opens in Lewisham at the end of the month, filling a glaring hole left when the Cannon in Catford closed in 2001.

The new cinema is on the Goldsmiths campus in New Cross which counts Oscar-winning director Steve McQueen among its alumni.

Other former students include Oscar-winning screenwriter Colin Welland, who died last year, and artist Sam Taylor-Johnson who moved into cinema with Beatles biopic Nowhere Boy and the Fifty Shades Of Grey film.

The college runs courses in filmmaking — teaching cinematography, editing and documentary-making.

Goldsmiths warden Patrick Loughrey said: “From Oscar winners to the use of film in research and teaching across the university, we have a rich screen heritage. Film has always brought people together, and this partnership with Curzon will helps us share our love of cinema with the local community, London and the wider world.”

A £1.8 million art gallery by Turner Prize-winning architects Assemble is also set to open on campus this year, in a converted Victorian bathhouse.

It has been brought to our attention that in fact the Deptford Cinema, on Deptford Broadway just inside the boundaries of Lewisham borough, began showing films last year. It is a 40-seat cinema founded as a not for profit community project and run by volunteers. For more information about the cinema visit http://www.deptfordcinema.org/. Update added 29/2/16
