The family of an eight-year-old boy who was killed in the Grenfell Tower disaster have paid tribute to him as “calm and friendly”.

Mehdi El-Wahabi, is one of numerous members of the same family feared to have died in the horrific blaze after becoming stuck on the 21st floor.

The Met Police confirmed the eight-year-old had been formally identified as one of the victims on Monday.

His parents, Abdulaziz El-Wahabi, 52, wife Faouzia, 41, and their eldest son Yasin, 20, have also been confirmed dead at inquests.

There has as yet been no official news on their daughter Nurhouda, 15, although she is presumed dead.

In a statement, his family said: “Mehdi was a calm and friendly young boy who loved his family very much.

“He was loved by staff and pupils at his school who held a beautiful memorial and made a plaque in memory of him."

Mehdi's cousin Senate Jones added: "You made me laugh and smile every day."

The family members have been identified as among the 80 people believed to have been killed in the fire on June 14.

Members of the family have also paid tribute to his borther Yasin, saying his “contagious smile will always be etched on our minds and hearts".

Inquests have been opened into the deaths of some of the victims, with 60 people having now been formally identified by the coroner.

Twenty-nine of the victims formally identified have not been named by request of their families.

Last week, retired judge Sir Martin Moore-Bick opened the public enquiry into the causes of the blaze, pledging not to “shrink” from making any demining findings.

The inquiry will run in two phases, the first examining the fire itself and the second examining how the building became “so seriously exposed to the risk of a disastrous fire”.
