Grisly pop-up Rat Café to open in London

Rodents: The Rat Café opens in the London Dungeon this evening

The old saying claims Londoners are never more than six feet away from a rat.

A special night at the London Dungeon is taking the adage one step further – by inviting visitors to dine with rodents.

For one night only The Rat Café is opening its doors to diners who can enjoy a slice of cake and coffee, while petting a tame rat or two.

Guests will be able to sip on ‘Ratuccinos’, ‘Rattes’ or tuck into a ‘Black Forest Rateau’ which have all been created in tribute to the family of rats.

Rattuccino: guests can enjoy rat-themed treats

The London Dungeon insists the Rat Café is completely hygienic and visitors will have to wash their hands after petting the rats. Dining and petting will be kept separate.

Hywel Matthias, general manager, said: “As the old adage goes, Londoners are never more than six feet away from a rat.

“Since the great plague rats have had an undeservingly bad name, but far from being dirty and sly our rat family are extremely well groomed and marvelously mischievous.

“We’re convinced our world first Rat Café will be a hit - it’s new, different, brilliantly eccentric and totally fun.”

The idea follows the opening of Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium which opened in east London earlier this year. A dog café is also scheduled to open in Hoxton.

The Rat Café will open its doors tonight from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. Entry is through pre-booking only. Visit www.thedungeons.com/london
