For those stepping up their distances in training for the 2024 London Marathon or looking for a good time over 13.1 miles, the autumn is a good time for a half marathon.

As well as the cooler, but pleasant, weather, the falling leaves can also provide a beautiful scene - if you are able to notice these things while pounding the pavement.

There are many places around the capital to test yourself over a half marathon, whether you are looking for a new PB, a different kind of challenge, or stepping up to the distance for the first time. The 2024 London Marathon will be on April 21, so for anyone new to running who is attempting the full distance, an autumn half will be a useful stepping stone.

Here are ten of the best half marathons in London this autumn and if there is just about time to train if you are ready to go.

The Big Half - Sunday, September 3

Mo Farah will have his last ever race in the capital at this one before he calls time on his career at the Great North Run. But, further back in the pack, there is plenty to be enjoyed as The Big Half is a sightseeing tour of central London. Places are running out.

Ealing Half Marathon - Sunday, September 24

Starting at Lammas Park Gardens, around 7,000 are expected to take on the 13.1 miles in west London with around 30,000 likely to line the route. There is a fully closed road and also a medal for all finishers.

October

Richmond Park Half Marathon - Sunday, October 1

A more accessible way to see one of the Royal Parks (see below for the full-blown junket) and it is also an affordable one with entry at £25. There is also a 5km and 10km option for those wanting a shorter option.

Royal Parks Half Marathon - Sunday, October 8

Linking the eight Royal parks, the event is famous for its beauty as well as its spirit and has found itself a key fixture on the calendars of runners for years. There are only a few places left for this one, and in 2023 your best bet for entry might be a charity place.

Victoria Park Half Marathon - Saturday, October 14

For those in the East Side, Victoria Park does offer a flat course that is perfect for a PB - although it is several laps of the same loop. That said, it is known for having a good, ready crowd of spectators and is in sight of the Olympic Park should you need more inspiration.

Lee Valley VeloPark Races - Saturday, October 28

A quirky one involving multiple laps of the one-mile MotoGP-inspired circuit. There’s also a free kids mile for you to bring any young ones along with you and make a day of it.

A route that takes in the town centre and also the river promises free chocolate to any finishers. The event raises money for Kingston Hospital.
