Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to line the banks of the river for the 165th Oxford vs Cambridge boat race this Sunday.

The annual clash will see Oxford and Cambridge return to the Thames to try to clinch victory, with two-time Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell set to become to the oldest competitor in the event’s history.

Around 300,000 people are expected to attend, although early weather forecasts suggest there may be rainy conditions on the big day.

The Boat Race is one of the biggest free sporting events in London and can be viewed easily from along the riverbank.

Getting there is also easy enough and fans can watch the event on big screens to get the perfect view.

Start time

The 2019 Boat Race will take place on Sunday, April 7.

The women's race gets under way at 2.13pm and the men's race follows the same route just under an hour later at 3.10pm.

By Tube

Many hoping to get there on time could choose to travel by Tube.

Putney Bridge is the closest London Underground station to the start line. The District Line stop is accessible from busy hubs like Victoria and Earls Court, although carriages may be busier as the day goes on.

Alternatively East Putney, a little further south, is only a short walk further away on the other side of the river.

This year's route

By Train

Putney, Barnes Bridge and Mortlake are all within walking distance of the bridge, with the latter sitting tight next to the finishing line.

Anyone hoping to catch the end of the race will want to arrive in good time - last year's men's race last just short of 17 minutes.

By Bus

Organisers recommend those travelling by bus to make use of their designated fan parks in Fulham and Hammersmith.

Buses to and from the parks, in Bishop's Park and Furnivall Gardens, include the 14, 22, 39, 74, 85, 93, 220, 265, and 270.
