A set of war medals were found near the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday, sparking an online hunt to find their owner.

Cliff Palmer shared a picture of the five medals on Facebook yesterday after the annual ceremony on London's Whitehall.

The Royal Navy veteran said there was no inscription on them to suggest who they might belong to.

Appealing for social media users to circulate the photograph in a bid to find the medals' owner, he said: "I need everyone to share this and get it spread far and wide.

"I found this set of court mounted medals on the floor at The Cenotaph, London during the Remembrance Service.

"Would love to return them to the owner as I know I'd be distraught if I lost mine. Please get sharing."

The photograph was subsequently shared thousands of times online and the medals' owner was reportedly tracked down.

Lostbox UK, a website which allows users to share information about lost items, said it had located the owner but did not reveal the person's identity.

Facebook user Geoff Murray appeared to be claiming ownership today.

Following an appeal yesterday to trace some war medals, he wrote this afternoon: "Thank you to ‪#‎Lostbox‬, Wullie's dads medals have been found."
