Islington council rejects plaque for knife victim

18 May 2012

Relatives of a young man who lost his life in a knife attack have been banned from placing a memorial at the spot where he was killed.

The family of Andrew Jaipaul wanted to install a bench on the Andover estate in Islington to commemorate the first anniversary of his death.

But Islington council refused permission to place a bench in a small park where Mr Jaipaul’s body was found because it is “against council policy” to have memorials on estates.

The 21-year-old was killed when he was set upon by a gang of up to 20 men on June 26 last year.

More than a dozen people have so far been arrested in connection with Mr Jaipaul’s death but no one has yet been charged.
