Italian football, film and food in London

10 April 2012

Movies about Italian sporting heroes, including the Grande Torino football team killed in a plane crash in 1949, are to be shown at a London festival dedicated to Italian cinema.

Cinema - Made In Italy, the second London Italian Film Festival, will also include 13 new films and events championing Italian food.

Il Grande Torino, often hailed in the Forties as Italy's best soccer club, was wiped out in a disaster like that which killed eight of Manchester United's "Busby Babes" in Munich in 1958. Other Italian sporting heroes who will feature in the films include postwar boxer Tiberio Mitri, and Marco Pantani, a champion cyclist beset by doping allegations in the Nineties.

The event, organised by the Italian Cultural Institute in London and the Istituto Luce Cinecittà in Rome, runs from March 9 to 30.
