Jeremy Corbyn's armed police protection officers tackled two moped robbers as they guarded him outside a north London restaurant.

The two Met officers, who had gone to the aid of the victim of an attempted robbery — believed to be an elderly woman — drew their guns on the pair after they were threatened with a knife by the pillion passenger.

As the gang tried to escape, one of the officers grabbed the arm of the moped rider, forcing the moped to a stop.

When the passenger drew a knife and threatened the officers, they pulled their handguns and ordered the man to drop the blade. The suspect fled.

The incident took place while the Labour leader was having a meal at the Beagle restaurant in Hoxton at lunchtime on Saturday.

No shots were fired and no one was injured.

The 17-year-old moped rider was arrested at the scene and appeared in court yesterday charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, two counts of handling stolen goods, driving with no insurance or licence.
