An 82-year-old woman died after being hit by a lorry in north-west London this morning.

Paramedics and an air ambulance team battled to save the pensioner - a pedestrian - but she died by the roadside minutes later.

It is believed she had got off a bus and was crossing the road when the accident happened.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "Police were called at 10.28am today to Banister Road at the junction with Chamberlayne Road by the London Ambulance Service to reports of a collision involving a lorry and a pedestrian.

"A woman in her 60s was being treated by the air ambulance unit but she was pronounced dead at 10.54am.

"Officers remain at the scene."

The lorry driver stopped and has not been arrested. Six bus routes - the 6, 28, 52, 187, 316 and 452 - were diverted around the road, which was shut while police investigated.

A local blogger, who asked not to be named, said she had driven past in the aftermath of the collision.

"I saw one of those tents pitched in the middle of the road," she said. "It's a really big junction. When you go from Notting Hill to Kensal Rise it's the main thoroughfare.

"For the last couple of hours it's been gridlocked.

"It's a tricky crossroads - there's a pedestrian crossing but it's complicated and confusing."

She added she had seen a "white, square truck with a metal back you can lift up and down" stopped at the scene.

The road reopened at about 1.25pm.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said "a number of resources" were sent to the scene including London's Air Ambulance.

"Sadly, despite extensive efforts to resuscitate the patient, she was pronounced dead at the scene by the doctor from London's Air Ambulance," he added.

Anyone who saw the collision or the events leading up to it is asked to call the Met's Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 020 8991 9555.
