Kensington striped house owner appeals court order to repaint it

A property developer who painted her Kensington townhouse with red and white stripes has lodged an appeal against a court ruling ordering her to repaint the property.

Zipporah Lisle-Mainwaring, 68, was told to get rid of the stripes after her neighbours labelled them an eyesore.

The homeowner, who lives in Switzerland, unsuccessfully challenged an order made by Kensington and Council to repaint the house last summer, and after another court hearing in December was told to return the house to its original state.

Mr Lisle-Mainwaring had previously told the Standard she would repaint the house if the council stopped a project a few streets away to turn a car park and office space into flats.

But now the case will head to a crown court after she decided to appeal the decision made at Hammersmith magistrates’ court in January ordering her to repaint the home.

A spokesman for Kensington and Chelsea council said: “The owner of the property in Kensington that has been painted with red and white stripes is appealing a decision by Hammersmith magistrates' court on 8 January which upheld a Section 215 Notice served by the council requiring her to repaint the property.

“The appeal will be heard in the crown court.

“At present no date has been set for the hearing.

“As the matter is still before the court the council will not be making any further comment.”

Ms Lisle-Mainwaring was accused of painting the multi-million pound property to get her own back on neighbours who objected to plans to dig a mega-basement beneath the property - an allegation she denies.
