LBC to broadcast across the country

Diversity plea: Mr Johnson admitted the Met still does not 'look like London'
30 January 2014

LBC is to go nationwide after 41 years as a London-only radio station, taking on BBC Radio 5 Live and local stations in the regions.

The move by owner Global Radio means the news and current affairs station will focus more on national issues and less on London ones.

LBC was Britain’s first commercial radio station when it was founded in 1973 and its slogan of “London’s Biggest Conversation” will be changed to “Leading Britain’s Conversation”.

The station’s breakfast presenter Nick Ferrari hosts Ask Clegg, the weekly phone-in with Nick Clegg, and Mayor Boris Johnson has taken part in occasional Ask Boris shows.

LBC will be broadcast on DAB digital radio from February 11, but will continue to be broadcast on 97.3FM in the capital. Until now, listeners outside London have only been able to hear it on the internet.

Ashley Tabor, Global Radio’s founder, said: “LBC has been a pioneer, challenging traditional formats and producing innovative shows.”

Global’s other leading stations, Capital and Heart, have gone national.
