Londoners are basking in the sun on the hottest day of the year today with temperatures higher than Ibiza.

The mercury hit 18C on Sunday bringing almost summer-type weather to the capital following the wettest winter on record.

The temperatures are double the average 9C weather expected for this time of year.

The highest temperature for the year so far is 14.9C which was recorded in London on February 24.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: "Cloud will continue to increase through the morning in the north, brighter initially in the south. Becoming rather cloudy everywhere later and feeling cooler with a brisk wind developing."

The switch to dry conditions is down to a big move by the Atlantic jet stream which gave Britain its wettest spell since records began nearly 250 years ago.

Similar weather will be seen across the south east region but London is expected to be the hottest. In comparison, Ibiza will hit highs of just 15C.
